Description

The Magnolia obovata or Magnolia hypoleuca is found in China and Japan. The flowers are hermaphrodite. It is deciduous and its fruit, an elongated, purple-red compound cone like receptacle 12 - 17 cm large, is filled with orange seeds. Studies of the biochemistry of the fruit have discovered that it is a source of three new phenylethanoid glycosides named magnoloside F (4), magnoloside G (5), and magnoloside H (6) and Neolignans from the fruits inhibit Nitric Oxide production. It has the potential as future treatments for a variety of illnesses.
