Leeks on a market stall in France

Description

France is a very large producer of leeks, ~Allium ampeloprasum var porrum~. While the blanched lower leaves are the part that is consumed it is often sold with roots and upper green leaves intact. The plant is in the lily family, that includes onions and asparagus. It is always eaten cooked and is most popular in northern Europe.
