15th century wooden bell tower, Brookland, Kent in 1974.

This conical bell tower, is an octagonal wooden construction with the roof constructed in three diminishing flounces. It was last clad in 1990 but in 1974 the roof dated from 1936 and appears to have been patched. It was built in the 15th century to cover the original open framework bell tower and is a unique form of architecture, set against St Augustine's church, an otherwise modest building. The church, built on a Saxon site, dates from 1250. One of a collection of historical photographs was taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest book.
