Chevy Chase sideboard in 1974.
Description
Chevy Chase sideboard in 1974. A carved sideboard once in the Grosvenor Arms Hotel, Shaftesbury, Dorset.
Created in the 18th century by Gerrard Robinson, this extraordinary artwork depicts the The Ballad of Chevy Chase an ancient border song dealing with the rivalry between the English Earl Percy of Northumberland and the Scottish Earl Douglas. This section is the Arrival of Douglas to challenge Hotspur. Sadly, the piece was sold to the USA around 2005. It was in store in Louisiana in a dismantled state when hurricane Katrina struck leaving it in slime and brackish water for six months. It has undergone extensive restoration and reconstruction.
This is part of a collection of photographs taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest book. Some are of objects and buildings that have changed or are now no longer in the same location. Some are taken in locations that have changed considerably over the past nearly 50 years.
