Alfred the Great Statue, Winchester, in 1974 . The most famous Anglo Saxon king.

The 4.5 meter bronze statue was erected in 1901, designed by Hamo Thornycroft, and weighs just over 5 tonnes. It was commissioned to mark the millennium of Alfred’s death, on the 26th October 899. Historical photograph was taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest publication.
