Glovers sign of unknown origin, Chester, in 1974.

Description

Glovers sign of unknown origin, Chester, Cheshire in 1974. A trade or shop sign

A symbol trade or shop sign for a glove business in Chester town centre in 1974. It may no longer be located there. Many trades hung signs to advertise their wares to a largely illiterate public. Commercial signage has a very ancient history. The gauntlet glove may be carved wood or cast metal and the crown appears to be a combination of materials perhaps including plaster detailing. The gauntlet is surmounted by a crown suggesting royal appointment or patronage. Historical photograph, taken in 1974 for a Readers Digest publication.
